Preventive care comes first

Healthy smiles start long before a cavity. Every visit includes coaching for your child and for you, from brushing and flossing at home to choosing tooth-friendly snacks.

Cleanings and exams

A thorough cleaning and exam help Dr. Pham understand your child's cavity risk and plan care. Visits include oral hygiene coaching, diet tips and guidance on teething, thumb and pacifier habits, and injury prevention.

Fluoride treatments

Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities. After the cleaning, Dr. Pham recommends the type of fluoride treatment that fits your child.

BPA-free sealants

Sealants are thin coatings painted into the grooves of the back teeth, where most cavities in kids and teens start. They can last for years and are checked at every visit.

Sports mouth guards

Protection for kids who play sports, to help prevent chipped and knocked-out teeth.

Low-radiation digital x-rays

EverGrins uses digital x-rays with the lowest possible exposure. Digital x-rays use about 90 percent less radiation than traditional film. Images appear on screen instantly and can be enlarged up to 400 percent, so Dr. Pham can see small problems early and explain them to you right there.

Digital panoramic x-rays are also available to check growth and development for orthodontic planning, and to look at wisdom teeth in teens. We also use an intraoral camera to photograph your child's teeth and compare them over time.

Fillings, crowns and no-drill options

When a tooth needs repair, Dr. Pham uses quick, kid-friendly restorations that protect the tooth and look natural.

Tooth-colored fillings

If your child has a cavity, Dr. Pham restores the tooth with a BPA-free, tooth-colored filling that blends in with the smile.

Tooth-colored crowns

White zirconia crowns cover and strengthen front or back teeth weakened by decay, injury, large fillings or discoloration.

Silver diamine fluoride

A liquid brushed onto a cavity in under a minute to stop decay, with no drilling or noise. Helpful for very young or anxious kids.

Cosmetic care

New teeth sometimes come in with spots or defects. Options include enamel microabrasion, composite bonding and white crowns.

Sedation dentistry for anxious kids

Dr. Pham and the team do everything they can to help your child feel relaxed. Sometimes a child is still anxious, very young, or has special needs that make treatment hard. In those cases Dr. Pham may suggest one of three levels of sedation, always chosen around your child's health, comfort and safety.

We'll review your child's medical history, anxiety level and treatment needs with you before recommending any option.

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

A mild sedative breathed through a small nose mask to help anxious kids relax. It works quickly, wears off quickly, can be adjusted during the visit and is non-allergenic. Your child stays fully awake, and it also calms the gag reflex.

Let us know if your child has a cold or any condition that makes breathing through the nose hard. A small number of children, especially those with severe anxiety or nasal congestion, don't respond to nitrous oxide; Dr. Pham will review your child's history and let you know if it's a good fit.

Oral conscious sedation

Medicine taken by mouth, used together with nitrous oxide when laughing gas alone isn't enough. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes to work. Your child may get drowsy but will not be unconscious.

It's often recommended for apprehensive or very young children and children with special needs, and it helps prevent injury from sudden movement during treatment. Some children need more than one visit to finish treatment. After the appointment your child should stay home from school and be supervised by an adult. Dr. Pham chooses the medication based on your child's health and treatment plan and is happy to answer questions about it.

General anesthesia (in our office)

For extremely anxious or very young children, and children with special needs who wouldn't do well with other options, Dr. Pham can complete all treatment in a single visit while your child is asleep. A board-certified dentist anesthesiologist provides the anesthesia and monitoring right here in our office, so you can wait in a familiar, relaxed setting.

General anesthesia carries more risk than lighter sedation, so it's recommended only when the benefits outweigh those risks. The alternatives can mean many appointments or a frightening experience for your child, and leaving decay untreated can lead to pain, infection, swelling and damage to developing adult teeth. Dr. Pham will walk you through the benefits and risks before you decide.

Our open-door policy

You're welcome to be with your child at every visit, except oral sedation and general anesthesia appointments. Many kids do great exploring the visit on their own in a space designed for them. If you think your child will be more comfortable with you there, come on back.

For children 3 and under it's very helpful to have a parent in the room, and little ones often sit right on your lap. For everyone's safety and privacy, we ask that siblings who aren't being seen wait in the reception room with a supervising adult.

Also offered: extractions, evaluation of habits and of growth and development, and individualized visits for children with special health care needs.

What is a pediatric dentist?

A pediatric dentist is a dentist with two to three extra years of specialty training in caring for infants, children, teens and patients with special health care needs. Dr. Trang Pham completed a two-year pediatric dentistry residency at USC and Children's Hospital Los Angeles and is board certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

How often should my child have a dental checkup?

Most children do best with a checkup and cleaning about every six months. Dr. Pham may suggest a different schedule depending on your child's cavity risk, and will talk it through with you at each visit.

What is silver diamine fluoride?

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a liquid brushed onto a cavity to stop it from growing. It takes less than a minute, with no drilling and no shots, which makes it helpful for very young or anxious children. The treated spot of the tooth turns dark, so Dr. Pham will talk through whether it's the right fit for your child.

Are dental x-rays safe for kids?

EverGrins uses digital x-rays, which use far less radiation than traditional film x-rays. Images appear instantly and can be enlarged on screen, so Dr. Pham can spot problems early while keeping exposure as low as possible.

Is laughing gas safe for children?

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is one of the safest and most widely used sedatives in dentistry. It works quickly, wears off quickly, can be adjusted during the visit, and your child stays fully awake. Let the office know if your child has trouble breathing through their nose.

Does EverGrins offer general anesthesia?

Yes. For very young or extremely anxious children, or children with special needs, Dr. Pham can complete all needed treatment in one visit under general anesthesia in the EverGrins office, with a board-certified dentist anesthesiologist. Dr. Pham reviews the benefits and risks with you first.

Can I come back with my child during treatment?

Yes. EverGrins has an open-door policy. You're welcome in the treatment room at every visit except oral sedation and general anesthesia appointments. Siblings who aren't being seen stay in the reception room with a supervising adult.
